Ida McFarland

Ida Howey McFarland passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Ogden Regional Medical Center.

She was born 9 August 1919 in Sunderland, Durham County, England, the daughter of Roger and Hilda France Howey.  She came with her mother, older brother, and younger twin brothers to America as converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They joined Mr. Howey in Ogden 26 May 1927 after a separation of two years. She made her home in Ogden for the rest of her life.

She attended Hendon Valley Road School in Sunderland, Pingree School and Lewis School in Ogden. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1936.

She became a naturalized citizen in June 1939.

Ida married Leslie James Doman on 22 April 1941. They were parents of two daughters, Gloria Jean and Beverly Kay Doman. They later divorced.

She married Keith Ray McFarland on 7 June 1952. She gained three children from that marriage, Kay Frances, Keith Reid, and Michael Ray McFarland. They were later divorced.

She married Jack H. Weaver on 19 March 1981 in Elko, Nevada. They too were later divorced.

As a member of the LDS Church, Ida attended the Second Ward, Thirteenth Ward, Twentieth Ward, and was a member of the Mount Ogden Ward at the time of her death.  She handled teaching duties in the Junior Sunday School, Sunday School, Primary, and Relief Society at various times in her life, and was a dedicated Relief Society Visiting Teacher.

After a satisfying career of more than 25 years, she retired from Hill Air Force Base 3 April 1981.

Other work experiences include S.H. Kress Company, J.J. Newberry, W.T. Grant, American Can Company, Nicholas Market, and the S & H Green Stamp Redemption Center.

Ida dearly loved her family and was proud of each and every one. She enjoyed her home and yard and worked hard to improve them until her health slowed her down in caring for her yard, much to her distress. She bowled for fun and won some trophies along the way. Sewing gave her much pleasure. When her children were young, she made many of their clothes.  She liked to crochet and completed many afghans she gave to her family and friends. Ida loved the Utah Jazz games and was an avid fan, win or lose. She enjoyed reading and could be completely absorbed in a book.

Surviving are three daughters, and one son, Mrs. Gloria (Ray L.) Ward, North Ogden; Mrs. B. Kay (Dennis L.) Walker, Trenton, UT; Mrs. Frances (Gordon) Burke, Ogden;

Michael Ray (Sally) McFarland, Ogden; 12 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara T. Howey, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Roger, Robson, Richard F. Howey, one son, Keith Reid McFarland, three sons-in-law, Robert B. Sowerby, Gaynard R. Harvey, and Leif Lund.

She especially wanted to thank publicly Sam and Julie Beasley and Dick Slater, her neighbors, who were so kind and helpful in many ways.

The family would like to thank her grandson, Roger B. Sowerby and his wife, Holli for their long dedication and service to Mother.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2015 at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends on Monday from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
