ILENE CUTLER HILL
Ilene Cutler Hill passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the age of 94 following a complete life of faith, work, and family.
She was born August 24, 1924 in Corinne, Utah to Joseph Ransom Cutler and Jennie Rozelle Wood. She was the 6th of seven children and the youngest of 5 sisters. She was raised and educated in Corinne, Utah and attended Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah.
She met her husband Burton Joseph Hill while attending High School. They met at a dance she was attending at Bear River High School where he attended school. They shared some dances and began dating. As soon as Burton graduated High School he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was sent to Europe as an Engineer Top Turret Gunner in a B-17. Ilene began her own war efforts and worked with her mother at Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City.
On June 22, 1945, she married Burton Hill in the Logan Temple. It was a double ceremony with Burt’s brother Ralph and his bride, Miriam. Burt was on 30 day leave from the Army so they visited Burt’s parents’ farm in Cove, Oregon where Ilene stayed until she could join him in Henderson, Nevada where he finished his enlistment in the Army. Upon his discharge they moved to Cove, Oregon where they purchased a farm adjoining his father’s and they farmed together.
Ilene worked hard raising six children and keeping the farm going. She was a good wife and support to her husband and was never one to shun the learning of new skills. Over the years she developed a reputation as an astute businesswoman. In the early 60s the family took up residence in the nearby town of La Grande, Oregon still farming in the evening and weekends, but their real estate holdings grew to include several rentals giving them additional income under her management. In 1970 the family moved to Pocatello, Idaho where they resided until returning to Oregon in 1981. She continued to purchase and manage rental properties and became involved in selling Magic Mill mixers, grinders, and other products and ultimately grew it into a successful kitchen specialties business.
Burt and Ilene celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary in Cove, Oregon on June 24, 2019 surrounded by family. She taught her children to be hard workers and to care for others. She always had room in her heart to reach out and help others in need. She was loved by her family and friends and will be missed.
Ilene is preceded in death by her father Joseph, her mother Jennie, brother Ransom, and sisters Jennie, Lenora, Joyce, and Venna. She is survived by her husband Burton; brother Bob; and her children Alan (Renee), Richard (Kerma), Clair (Nancy), Kathleen Kunz (Kent), Jennie Loveland (Von), and Ben (Laura). She has 37 Grandchildren and 108 Great Grandchildren with numerous nieces and nephews.
