Iola H. Ukena

Iola H. Ukena SOUTH WEBER - Elda Iola Hurd Ukena, one of our Heavenly Father’s children, reported for her new assignment on February 24, 2010. Iola was born November 10, 1925, in Ogden Utah, the youngest daughter of Wilford and Elda Bingham Hurd. She was a loving daughter, wife, aunt, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Iola married James Darrel Ingram. They were later divorced. Iola married her eternal sweetheart, Arthur Monroe Ukena on March 21, 1946. Later the marriage was solemnized in the Logan Temple. One of the greatest experiences the family shared was when they were all sealed together for eternity. Art and Iola have enjoyed 65 wonderful years of marriage. Iola loved music; her talents started at a young age with her mother and sister. She was an accomplished violinist and singer, writing music for programs, and singing in two traveling quartets. Iola had many hobbies; bowling (where she won numerous awards), monthly ladies club, cross stitching, reading, writing poems, completing hard puzzles, and spending time at the family cabin. She and Art raised their family on a small farm in South Weber where they lived for the past 56 years. Iola was a wonderful homemaker, she made delicious homemade bread, Christmas chocolates, and her canned foods won many awards. She was a talented seamstress providing stylish clothing for her children. Iola could stretch a small pay check to feed a large family. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many church callings including Relief Society President, Young Women Presidency, Librarian, and Visiting Teacher. She enjoyed working with the youth by being a play writer, director, and performing in road shows. Her love for Genealogy started at a young age and extended over 60 years researching her own family history. She served for over 20 years in the name extraction program. She supported her husband as bishop for over 7 years by being the ward mom. Her life was a true example of charity providing endless hours of selfless service. Our Heavenly Angel will eternally hold the hearts of her loving husband and family. We will forever love and cherish all the unforgettable memories. She is survived by a loving husband, six children, Sherry Lee Ingram (Dave) Squires, Riverdale; Dale (Gail) Ukena and Lloyd (Jan) Ukena, South Weber; Jill (Glen) Higley, Clinton; Steve Ukena, West Weber; Leann Ukena, Salt Lake City; daughter-in-law Kathy Avis, Clearfield; 23 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, five step great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son Richard, three grandsons, one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, her parents, two sisters, and one brother.
