IRENE SPERRY
The Long Goodbye Is Over!
Mom entered into eternity on June 11, 2007 at 4:12 p.m. from home as she wished, after an eight year battle with Alzheimer’s in which she had many victories. She endured the difficulties of this disease well, and carried a sense of humor and a sweet spirit throughout.
Irene was born on September 24, 1921 in Providence, Rhode Island to Ernest and Lillian Hoyle but was raised by her loving grandparents, Henry and Margaret Hampson.
Mom moved to Orlando, Florida in 1943 to work for the phone company. It was there, on October 7, 1944, that she married the only man she would ever love, Hugh C Sperry. After Dad’s discharge from the military, they relocated to Utah, where they shared their lives together for 55 years before Dad passed away on September 20, 1999.
For the first 20 years of their marriage, Mom stayed at home, caring for her six children. When her last child entered school, Mom went to work at the Internal Revenue Service, where she enjoyed many friendships. She spent 18 years in Batching before retiring in 1983.
In her early years, Mom enjoyed her Friday night bowling league, playing bridge with a ladies group and cooking fantastic Sunday dinners. Saturdays were not complete without a shopping trip to the old Ogden Mall and a halibut dinner at the ZCMI Tiffin Room.
Mom was a life long member of the Catholic Church. She worshipped the Lord at both St Rose of Lima and St Mary’s. For the last four years of her life, she was blessed to attend both the Catholic Church and Washington Heights Baptist Church. Mom’s legacy will be her walk of faith. To the very end, she fought the good fight, she kept the faith, and she finished her race well. She instilled in her children the importance of trusting Christ for salvation. For this, we are eternally grateful!
Irene is survived by five of her six children: Michael (Tona) Sperry, Ogden; Christine (Christopher) Rivera, Clearfield; Marsha Pledger, Clinton; Hugh (Brenda Jorgenson) Sperry, Uintah; and Lisa (Kent) Fox, Eden; 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, her husband Hugh (1999) and her oldest daughter Kathleen (2003).
The family would like to give thanks to Comfort Care Hospice, and a special heartfelt thanks goes out to Holli of Specialty Nursing Services who provided much comfort and reassurance in the last month of Mom’s life.
Mom you were the best – we love you and we’ll see you soon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, 1236 Ginger Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA 23453 (phone/FAX 877-427-0220)in Irene’s name.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the services at the mortuary.
