Ivan P. Pack

1938-2017

Ivan (Terry) Phillip Pack, 79, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2017 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born with red hair on June 5, 1938 in Salt Lake City to Ivan and Phyllis Pratt Pack followed later by twin brothers. He lived at various locations in between South Temple and 4th South in downtown Salt Lake providing him many adventures during his childhood, and he became an accomplished yo-yo artist winning several prizes in contests sponsored by Duncan yo-yo.

He served a mission in the Uruguay Montevideo Mission from 1958-1961.  In his younger years, he worked in a flagstone quarry, as a caddy at the Fort Douglas Country Club, Railway Express Agency delivery driver, a reliability technician at the Hercules Powder Company, and as a production technician at Lynn Wilson Products where he was introduced to a bookkeeper named Gail Hoppie.  The first date they went on was a double date—with other people.  Their first date with each other was at a company Christmas party.  They married on December 15, 1961, raised four children and spent 48 wonderful years together before Gail’s passing in 2009.  The majority of their married life was spent in Bountiful. They especially enjoyed spending time at their cabin in the Mount Air Canyon, where he dedicated several years to serving on the Panorama Board of Trustees.

Ivan enjoyed a 36-year career working for the LDS Church in several capacities in the IT field mostly with genealogical applications.  He had a hand in many interesting projects including designing a production control system for microfilm processing at the Granite Mountain Vaults, supporting a Pedigree Referral Service computer system, designing a system to process names for temple work known as Genealogical Information and Name Tabulation (GIANT), and designing the microfilm circulation system in what are now called Family History Centers.  He served faithfully in many ward and stake callings, and had a firm testimony of the Savior and His restored Gospel.   He spent countless hours doing family history work which benefitted thousands of his ancestors.

He is survived by his four children: Leslie (Eric) Rossi, Leland (Sharon), Martin (Kazumi), and Nicole; 10 grandchildren: Tarrin, Dylan, and Brit; Halie, Connor, and Lauren; Andrew, Abigail, and Sylvia; and Tyrell; and one great-grandchild, with one on the way.  He is also survived by a brother, Mark (Marilyn).  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gail, his brother Steven, and his loving dog Zeus.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Bountiful 54th Ward, 540 N. 1200 E., where friends may visit family from 9:00 to 10:30 am prior to the services. Interment will follow at the Bountiful City Cemetery. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary.
