J. Raymond “Ray” Stowers
NORTH OGDEN – James Raymond “Ray” Stowers, 93, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at his home in North Ogden.
He was born December 14, 1914 in Carter, Oklahoma, a son of Jesse Lee and Nannie Wolfe Stowers. Ray was raised on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma. His love for raising cattle continued throughout his life.
He met the love of his life, Lydia “Maurine” Jackson, at Utah State University whom he married on April 4, 1941 in Ogden, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Logan, Utah, Franklin, Louisiana and Grenada, Mississippi where he managed purebred Hereford and Brahma cattle plantations, Slaterville, Ogden, South Ogden and North Ogden.
He graduated from Carter High School, Cameron Junior College, Oklahoma State University and earned his Masters degree at Utah State Agricultural College.
He was a farm and ranch appraiser for Prudential Insurance Company of America for Utah, Idaho and Wyoming for 23 years. Following his retirement from Prudential Insurance, he was an appraiser and senior vice president for Utah Mortgage Loan Company and also served as vice president of an Ogden City bank. He worked with King Ranch in Texas and was widely respected and awarded for his judging of livestock. He judged cattle at the National Livestock Show in Denver, CO.
Ray was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various church callings including the Bishopric of the Ogden 32nd Ward, Riverdale Stake Clerk, Sunday School Superintendent, the Scout Committee, an Ogden Temple worker at the baptistry, and was a faithful home teacher.
Of all the things in life, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family, although ice cream and anything sweet was a close second. He loved the beauties of the earth, including watching a herd of cattle grazing in a lush green meadow, to the majestic beauty of Ben Lomond Peak which he viewed frequently from his front porch. His contagious smile and wink will be a cherished memory etched forever in our minds.
He is survived by three sons, Arthur R. (Pegge) Stowers, North Ogden; Steven L. (Carol) Stowers, Nibley, UT; Robert K. (Susanne) Stowers, North Ogden; a daughter, Lynnette (Kevin) Corbett, North Ogden; son-in-law, Stanton Taylor, Ogden; brother, Jack (Donnie) Stowers, Lone Wolf, OK; 25 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
