Jack D. Scott

Jack D. Scott 10/22/1935 – 12/31/2007 SOUTH OGDEN – Jack D. Scott, 72, passed away Monday, December 31, 2007 at Manor Care Nursing Center from cancer. He was born October 22, 1935 in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Preston and Esther Stinehart Scott. As the family moved in conjunction with Preston’s work assignments, Jack lived in South Dakota, California, Alaska and New York. He joined the U.S. Navy in November of 1956 “to sail the world” and proudly served as a signalman aboard the U.S.S. Suribachi, AE-21, until he was honorably discharged after four years of service. In 1962, Jack married Sharon Wilms and shortly thereafter began a 30 year career with Caterpillar Corporation in Peoria, Illinois. Jack and Sharon had two children, David and Diane, before they divorced. After retiring from Caterpillar in 1992, Jack moved to Utah to be near his parents, brothers, nieces and nephews. During his retirement years in Utah Jack loved being with family, rooting for the Utah Jazz, and recording movies. His last few years were enriched by fishing, boating, dining and enjoying Utah’s scenery with his brother, Jerry. Jack and his family are grateful to Jerry for the loving, dedicated care he gave throughout Jack’s last years, especially during Jack’s illness with cancer, and for being Jack’s raison d’etre. The family also is grateful for the comfort and care provided by Pinnacle Hospice and Manor Care of South Ogden. Most of all the family is grateful for Jack, our eldest brother and second eldest sibling. Jack maintained his sense of humor and an amazingly positive attitude throughout his illness. He did not make demands or plea for sympathy. He constantly expressed appreciation for even the smallest of considerations. The family is proud of the character and spirit Jack displayed until the end. Your nurses and nursing assistants were right, Jack. In the words the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas wrote to encourage his dying octogenarian father, you did “not go gently into that good night.” You raged, Jack, raged “against the dying of the light.” Your fortitude against a merciless foe strengthens all of us and lives on as your legacy. Jack is survived by his children, David Scott, and Diane (Colby) Rude, both of Canton, IL; brothers, Gerald (Karen) Scott, Roy; Dr. Randolph (Darlene) Scott, West Haven; R. Craig Scott, Ogden; sisters, Janice McKnight, San Antonio, TX; and Audrey Stanyer, Parker, AZ; sister-in-law, Cheryl Scott, North Ogden; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thomas L. (Cheryl) Scott. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may call at the mortuary on Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., where Military Honors will be accorded.
