Jack Paul Silotti

LAYTON- Jack Paul Silotti, age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born May 20, 1925 in Cottonwood, Utah to Paul Joseph and Madge Guiver Silotti in a very tiny, one bedroom house.

Jack was raised in the Avenues and at age 17, while attending East High School, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp.  He served in World War II as a tail gunner and aircraft mechanic.  While preparing for the invasion of Yap Island in the Pacific Ocean he was stranded on the troop carrier Zoella Lykes for three months.  He completed his World War II service in the Philippines.  He also served in the Korean War.  Jack was very proud to have served his country as a U.S. Marine.

After his service he married Joyce Edythe Ogden on December 12, 1953, in Ely, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 23, 1962.  Jack and his beautiful wife Joyce raised their family of four awesome daughters and one amazing son in Kaysville and then later moved to Layton.  He retired from Hill Air Force Base where he worked as a Procurement Contracting Officer.

Jack loved to play baseball and softball. He was an all-star shortstop.  For many years he umpired across Utah tossing out any player that he heard cuss or swear.  He and Joyce were avid Square Dancers and the family spent many fun summers traveling to various Square Dance Jamborees across the country and Canada.  Jack loved to walk and hike and one of his favorite jaunts was to back pack down the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River.  He also loved to hunt and fish.

Jack was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he and Joyce served a mission to the Nevada Las Vegas Mission in 1995-1996.  They also spent many winters in St. George enjoying the sun, golfing and hiking the hills.

Jack is survived by his children:  Valerie (Robert) Cutler, Tina (Jeffrey) Felt, Michelle (David) Hatch, Wesley (Janet) Silotti, and Angela (Brent) Carling; 16 Grandchildren and 25 Great Grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother, Gene Silotti and sisters, Carol (Don) Hamilton, Sylvia (Reed) Maynard and Donna (Bob) Steffensen.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald Silotti.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Holmes Creek Stake Center, 125 Chapel Street, Layton, UT.  Friends may visit family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist Mortuary, 1887 North Fairfield Road, Layton and Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30 a.m. at the church.  Internment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
