SOUTH OGDEN - Jack Vandenberg, 80, was reunited once again with the love of his life on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. He passed away at McKay Dee Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Jack devoted his entire life to his family, country and friends.
Born in Ogden, Utah June 7, 1930 to Louis and Lena VanDyle Vandenberg he grew up surrounded by loving sisters and a brother with a lot of spunk. He graduated from Ogden High in 1948 where he enjoyed playing high school football and met his high school sweetheart, Venita Grant. He enlisted with the U.S. Navy in 1949. He married Venita on November 25, 1950 at Camp Delmar Oceanside, California. He served his country with honor and distinction in the Korean War November 1950 through September 1951 where he was wounded in action and received two Purple Hearts. He named his first son Douglas in honor of the Senator who brought him home from Korea. He continued serving with the Navy in Hawaii, Oregon, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Antarctica and retired with full honors after 20 years of service. He moved his family to South Ogden in 1968 and began a second career at Wonder Bread Bakery. He loved to bring home cases of twinkies and fruit pies to his grandchildren. Jack earned a second retirement through the bakery.
Jack was a man far greater than any other who counted every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild as a blessing. Hobbies were important to him including model building, yard work, and working on his Ford truck. He embraced his heart to anyone who came to his door and was known to all as “Grandpa”.
