Jack Ervin Young
November 22, 1925 ~ June 17, 2017
Jack Ervin Young, 91, passed away in his sleep on June 17, 2017. His sweetheart, Maxine Boyce Young, slept by his side. He was born on November 22, 1925 to World War I Veteran Joseph Raymond Young and Corantha Beatrice Bleumel. He was their third son. Glen, Clyde, and Jack cared for sister Joyce who followed. A child of the Great Depression, he sold newspapers on the streets of Ogden, Utah at age 6. "Mighty Mite" Jack ran fast, fought hard... worked harder. As a 14 year old, he delivered newspapers to the Boyces and met his beloved Maxine.
Seventeen year old Jack graduated from Ogden High School and left to serve in the US Navy till the end of World War II. He married Maxine in Reno. They had two children. When as a reservist, Jack was drafted into active service for the Korean conflict. He served in Seattle, WA as a gunnery instructor till wars' end. The Youngs made their home on 29th and Jackson.
With the loss of their new baby, Joni Lynn, they became active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Two sons completed the family - James Dann and Kevin. Jack worked at the PFE Railroad and Key Bank Trust Department (eventually retiring from both). He managed to paint the house, work in many church callings, serve his extended family, grieve the loss of his son, 16 year old Danny, adapt and move on.
He wore the Santa suit at Christmas. He supported his wife in gaining her college degrees, saw son Jack serve in the US Navy, making three generations of military service. Through the years of family, education, missions, marriages, he worked so hard.
Retirement allowed opportunity for extensive travel, two full time missions to Washington DC, elderhostels, wonderful friendships. His extraordinary faith and dedicated romance are legendary.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of nearly seventy-two years, Maxine Young “Honey”; three children, daughter, Judy (Robert) Perkins of Salt Lake City; sons, Jack R. (Janette) Young of Hooper and Kevin (Jody) Young of Farmington; and Maxine's sister, Althea Ranson. There are ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. They share to various degrees, Jack Young's hot temper, resilience, and astonishing work ethic. They hope to tend his garden well, but the neighborhood will never be the same.
