Our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend Jackie Lynn Mathews returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father in the early morning of November 14, 2023 after a valiant, lifelong struggle with lupus.
Jackie was born in Salinas, California on July 29, 1958 to Jon P. and Roberta Mathews. Jackie was the oldest of seven children and with that came much responsibility. She was always a great example to her younger siblings and was always concerned about them and their well-being.
Jackie grew up in Loveland, Colorado and one of her favorite things as a child was playing hopscotch and at only eight years old, she had heart surgery. Jackie was blessed with a beautiful voice and often sang at many activities and meetings with her father when she was younger and continued on as she got older and as her body allowed her to do so. Jackie graduated from high school and went on to study at BYU. During her studies, Jackie was called to serve in the Louisville, Kentucky mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved her mission and spoke of it often during the course of her life. She would often say, “it was great to be a sister missionary and I love this missionary work. I think it’s great! My mission was the best thing that I did in my life. “
Shortly after returning home from Kentucky, Jackie was diagnosed with lupus. This changed her life forever and in so many ways. But no matter the fight, she was always seen with a smile on her face and an optimistic attitude.
Jackie held down multiple jobs through the years even though lupus always seemed to get in the way. Her favorite was being in management at Weinstock department store in Salt Lake City. Over the years, Jackie often could be heard playing “Moon River” on the piano, making candy bar cards for friends and loved ones and singing.
Jackie will be dearly missed. Her contagious laugh, great smile and kindness will always be remembered by those who had the privilege to know and love her. Jackie was the truest example of “enduring to the end.”
Jackie is survived by her mother, Roberta Mathews, and four sisters; Sheryl Webb, Julie Mackelprang, Susanne Qualls, and Marcia Fawcett as well as two brothers; Darin and Paul Mathews. She was proceeded in death by her father Jon P. Mathews.
