James Hugh Della Silva

James Hugh Della Silva, Syracuse, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2017.  James was born on March 5, 1930 in Ogden.  He graduated from Ogden High School.  He attended Utah State University in Logan and received an Associate Degree from Weber State College in Ogden.  He married Doris M. Wilson on October 3, 1953 and after almost 50 years of marriage they divorced.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor Device during the Korean War prior to being honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 7th Infantry Division Associaton, the 31st Infantry Regiment Association, and the American Legion.

James was proud of his Italian heritage. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gold-panning, watching hockey, and traveling. He loved his years in Alaska and was very fond of his time in Egypt as a civil servant while stationed at the US Embassy there. In addition to being an avid sportsman and a true patriot, James was a family man. He was a devoted grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren and extended family.

James is survived by his children: James Val (Karen) Della Silva, Las Vegas, NV; LtCOL USA-RET  Joseph J. (Debra) Della Silva, Huntsville, AL; Mary S. (Charles) McCormick, Bend, OR; Georgina (MasterSGT USAF-RET Charles Cuthbertson) Della Silva, Mountain Green, UT; Tina Della Silva, Las Vegas, NV; Charles M. (Kelly) Della Silva, Meridian, ID;  and Sheri A. Della Silva, Valencia, CA;  11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; He is also survived by his siblings: David Lee (Elizabeth) Della Silva, Ogden, UT; Dianne Paskett, Plain City, UT; Barry (Sherry) Della Silva, Trout Creek, MT; Brent Della Silva, Syracuse, UT; Kevin (Cora) Della Silva, Syracuse, UT; and Paul (June) Della Silva, Syracuse, UT; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother,Val Della Silva; and two grandsons, Thomas Dean McCormick and James August Della Silva.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  The family will meet with friends on Monday from 6 to 8p.m. and Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

James will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Association.
