James Melvin Gardiner

James Melvin Gardiner died peacefully Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Country Pines in Clinton.

He was born March 21, 1935 in Salt Lake City to Melvin C. and Elaine Hancey Gardiner. He grew up in Ogden, attended Polk Elementary, Central Junior High and Ogden High School, graduating in 1953.

He began work at the OUR&D Co. in 1954, retiring from Union Pacific as a locomotive engineer in 1997 after 43 years of railroad service.

On November 17, 1954, Jim married Norrine Jones in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised their four children in South Ogden and moved to Washington Terrace in 2004.

He loved fishing, hunting, boating, camping, skiing, photography (especially birds and wildflowers), archery and travel. A Certified Ski Instructor, he taught at Snow Basin for several seasons with the Earl Miller ski School. He visited Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, many mainland states and numerous fishing and camping trips with family and friends. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Geodiscipilous geology and travel club, Northern Utah Bass Anglers and Ogden Camera Club.

Jim served in the LDS Church in many callings, including ward clerk, Elder’s Quorum President, Stake Sunday School President, and teaching assignments, among others.

He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Barbara Ann G. Anderson and her husband, Brent. He is survived by his wife, his son, Stan (Marcia Taylor) Gardiner, Roy; three daughters, Christine G. Hatch, Apache Junction, AZ; Susan G. (Scott) Mumford, Roy; MaryAnn G. (Jeff) Francis, Clinton; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Mickey) Gardiner, West Valley City; Ron (Josie) Gardiner, Roy; and one sister, Katherine Elliott, Salt Lake City.

Graveside dedication will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Hooper Cemetery. The family will meet with friends Thursday, May 24th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.
