James Hartshorn

October 29, 1922 — March 8, 2018

James Hartshorn, 95, passed away March 8, 2018 of natural causes due to age.  Jim was born October 29, 1922 in Mammoth, Utah to James and Jenny Hartshorn.  He learned to work hard on the family farm after the death of his father and older brother, David.

After graduation from high school Jim joined the US Army and served during World War II in England and France.  It was in England where he met and married his first wife, Frances Forscutt.  They were the proud parents of two children, Sylvia and Cliff.  After the war they returned to Lehi, Utah where Jim worked at the Geneva Steel Mills and later as a machinist at Tooele Army Depot.  For many years he resided in American Fork and Tooele cities.  After his divorce he married Dorothy Van Vleet.  They later moved to St. George, Utah.  Jim was extremely talented and had the ability to fix anything that didn’t work. He was very generous, always helping friends and family when they were in need.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting especially with his son Cliff.  In later life he moved to Syracuse, Utah to live with Cliff.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, David and Melvin; sister, Evelyn; and his first and second wives.  Jim is survived by his brother, Ralph (Carla) Harthshorn, Boise, ID; his sister, Wanda Holt, South Jordan, UT; daughter, Sylvia Baker, St. George, UT; son, Cliff Hartshorn, Syracuse, UT; step children, Lynn (Vern) Anthony, Washington, UT; Susan (Jim) Benson, Salt Lake City, UT; Steve (Jill) Van Vleet, Canyon Lake, TX; Marsha (Kevin) Jennings, Long Beach, CA and Kelly Clark, Stansbury, UT.  He leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. George Cemetery, 600 East Tabernacle, St. George, Utah.
