James Newell Randall, 91, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at Ogden Regional Medical Center of congestive heart failure.

He was born April 17, 1917 in Provo, Utah, a son of James Walter and Alice Newell Randall, and the great-grandson of Abraham Owen Smoot. He lived in Worland, Wyoming from 1917 to 1929 and moved to Ogden in 1929. He attended Polk Elementary School, Central Jr. High School and graduated from Ogden High School in 1935. Dad loved playing football and played tackle for Ogden High and later Utah State Agricultural College. He was proud to be a member of the 1936 Rocky Mountain Conference Championship Team. He was also a member of A"X (Sigma Chi) Fraternity and the R.O.T.C. He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1939 with degrees in animal husbandry and agronomy.

Jim married Ruth Hansen Johnson on November 22, 1939 in Logan, Utah. They had three children, Christine (Julio) Acevedo, Jan Logan, and Becky (Dolph) Woods. They later divorced. He married Murrel Scott on September 8, 1969 in Boise, Idaho. She preceded him in death on October 21, 2003.

He moved to Farr West in 1940. Dad was a master farmer and won many agricultural awards. He grew sugar beets and raised purebred Hereford cattle. He was instrumental in bringing sewer and secondary water to Farr West and served as President of the Ogden River Water Users for 38 years. In 1966, he began working for Amalgamated Sugar Company as an agriculturist and manager of the Utah District. He retired from the Sugar Co. and farming in 1981. After his retirement, he and Murrel traveled many places together.

Dad loved to golf and was a member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club serving on their Board of Directors for three years. He loved to tell us how many golf courses he had played on all over the world.

Surviving are his children, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two sisters, Alice Cawley and Karleen Sabey, two step-children and seven step-grandchildren.
