James Michael Sutton
James Michael Sutton, 65, passed away November 30, 2009 from complications of an extended illness. He was born June 19, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George Levis Sutton and Lexie Mayme Cameron Sutton. Jim was a lifelong resident of Layton, Utah. He graduated from Davis High School in 1962 and attended Weber College. He married Catherine Ann Johnston on August 10, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Jim spent most of his adult life working in banking, real estate, and mortgage lending. These careers showcased his ability with numbers and his skills as a people person, storyteller and conversationalist. Though he did not complete a university degree, Jim strongly valued education and deeply desired for each of his children to obtain the highest level of education possible.
An active member of the LDS church, Jim served in many ways, including long tenures as scoutmaster and Sunday school president. His callings as high priest group leader and member of the stake high council were very fulfilling and spiritual experiences for him. Jim served in the Scottish Mission from 1963-65, which gave him the opportunity to follow in his beloved great-uncle''s missionary footsteps and to learn more about the country of his ancestors. Jim had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He recognized the power of prayer in his life. He encouraged his children to demonstrate their faith by their faithfulness.
Jim lived by President Gordon B. Hinckley''s admonition to "be true to who you are and the family name you bear." He esteemed his pioneer ancestry and delighted in sharing stories with his children about their heritage. He also taught his children to treasure their family relationships and to care for each other. Jim loved each of his children and was proud of their accomplishments, individuality and independence.
He is survived by his wife, Cathie; his six children, Amy, Allison, Jamie (Heather), Erin, Leslie, and Paul (Marin); his two granddaughters, Samantha and Hailey; and his brother, David (Christina). He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Matt Curtis.
