James Edwin Thurell
August 3, 1932 ~ January 30, 2014
Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and brother-in-law, James Edwin Thurell, 81, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 3, 1932 to Oliver Charles and Beatrice Nash Thurell.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He loved serving in the Air Force and continued serving after the wars.
James married Marlene Farr in Ogden, Utah on September 2, 1954. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 3, 1968. After over 40 years of marriage, Marlene passed away on January 8, 2012.
He taught art and history at North Davis Jr. High and Syracuse Jr. High. After retiring he volunteered at the Air Force Museum for over 20 years.
James was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many different callings, but his favorite was serving in the scouting program for 15 years.
He loved to paint and draw and was a great artist. He enjoyed traveling and being in the outdoors skiing and hunting.
James is survived by his sons, Mark James Thurell, AZ; Christian Parry (Janalee) Thurell, Ogden; Douglas Michael (Rona) Thurell, CA; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren with one on the way; sister, Shirly; brother-in-law, Robert (Shirley) Farr; and sister-in-law, Joyce (Vic) Durbano.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene; and sister, Beverly.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
