James Blake Turney
(1956-2009)
LAYTON – James Blake Turney, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather passed away on January 8, 2009 due to a car accident in Laurens, South Carolina. He was born September 28, 1956 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Annie Mae and Leroy Turney. Blake was a master carpenter; he loved his work and was highly sought after because of his many talents. There was nothing he couldn’t build or fix, his standards were of the highest caliber. He would always say, “I build it like I am building it for myself.” Many friends and associates will miss him terribly. He was known for his honesty and kindness. He opened his own business in North Carolina at the young age of 19. He married Beverly and together they had four beautiful daughters that he dearly loved: Kimberly (Russell Meehan), Jamestown, NC; Myia, Greensboro, NC; Beth (Jeremy Wingard) Salt Lake City, UT; Brooke Hall, Gibsonville, NC. He has three cherished grandchildren: Bynam and Alaska Hall, and Kathryn Meehan.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Terry Leroy Turney. He is survived by his brother John, his sister Nadine (Cary Mason) and their four sons, Austin, Noah, Logan and Jon Cary. Blake married Linda Mortensen, January 6, 2002 in Salt Lake City, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple May 12, 2007. He is also survived by his stepchildren that he loved like his own: Sherry Daniels, Stephanie Crandall, Gordon Scott Crandall, and Spencer Clegg Crandall. Isaac and Ben Daniels are his Utah grandchildren.
Blake served as Elders Quorum Secretary and Elders Quorum Counselor, and most recently as a ward missionary. He loved those with whom he served in these callings. Blake loved to fish and camp and felt he didn’t have enough time to enjoy these activities lately. He loved softball and had his own team at one time.
Funeral services will be held in Greensboro, NC on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Community Baptist, 1330 Burnett Chapel Rd., Greensboro, NC. A viewing will be held at the same location from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 11.
Services will also be held in Layton, Utah on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Tri Oaks LDS meeting house, 2375 East 3225 North. Friends and family may call Wednesday, January 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 at the church.
