James Thomas Vernieu

May 6, 1938 ~ March 24, 2016

James Thomas Vernieu “Jim”, life-long resident of Ogden, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Crestwood Care Center in Ogden.  James was born on May 6, 1938 in Ogden to John Godfrey and Lucille Dee Thomas Vernieu.  Jim was the youngest of six children – John, Paul, Richard, Joan Ross, Charles, and Jim.

Jim graduated from Ogden High School in 1956.  He worked for Sperry-Rand Corporation and attended classes at Weber College.  In 1968, Jim’s life took a different path after a near-fatal car accident.  After a long hospitalization for a TBI, lengthy rehabilitation, and unconditional love and support from his family, Jim progressed and recovered to continue the journey of his life.  Jim had a positive attitude and always looked forward, not back.  He was kind to people around him and helped others whenever he could.

Jim was employed as the Parking Lot Attendant at the old ZCMI Department Store on 24th and Washington for many years in the 70s and 80s.  He lived at Saint Benedict’s Manor from 1983 to 2010, when he moved to The Gardens Assisted Living Center in Ogden.  He lived and prospered at The Gardens for almost 6 years, with much love and support from the staff and residents.

Jim was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rock Cliff 1st Ward.  He faithfully attended church services at the Gardens every Sunday.

Jim’s favorite activities at the Gardens were the weekly van rides up Ogden Canyon, playing bingo, and enjoying meals with the other residents.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and all siblings.

Jim is survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy Vernieu, and nieces and nephews, Paulette (Bill) Herman, Bill Vernieu, Michelle (Zack) Tanner, and Craig Vernieu; Peggy Vernieu, John Vernieu, and Mary Vernieu; also Curtis (Peggy) Ross, Lynn (Frank) Schoendorfer, and Jan (Jack) Angelo.

Special thanks go to the wonderful, caring staff at the Gardens and also to Encompass Hospice and Crestwood for their professional, loving care.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
