JAMES "JIM" ELIOT SAMPSON
1935-2017
After a life well spent in service and love, both given and received, James Eliot Sampson peacefully returned to our Heavenly Father on August 9, 2017, at his home in Bountiful, Utah.
Born on June 6, 1935, Jim grew up in Ogden, Utah where he met the love of his life, Sally Bell. He married her for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on January 3, 1955. After enlisting in the US Army during the Korean War, he was stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1956, after which he returned to Ogden to start his family and professional career. He loved the Lord and faithfully served wherever he was called. Jim and Sally made their home in Bountiful, Utah where they raised their children and lived for over 55 years.
Jim found a calling working in the financial industry where he was a branch manager for Chrysler Financial, working with Chrysler Automotive dealerships in all their various financial needs. After 32 years, he officially retired but still consulted for several dealerships for many years. Through his work, Jim created many lasting professional and personal relationships that he truly cherished.
Jim also loved the outdoors. Throughout his life, he loved playing golf with friends, colleagues, and family, especially with Sally. He played at many golf courses, but a favorite was spending a few weeks every year playing golf in Palm Springs, California. After his retirement, Jim also became an avid fly fisherman, following in the footsteps of his father. During the summers, if he wasn't on the golf course he was on the river. Stump Creek in Star Valley, Wyoming was one of his favorites and many of his grandchildren have fond memories of fishing with Grandpa there.
Whether it was as a little league coach, Utah Jazz supporter, or a diehard Ute fan, Jim loved watching, reading, and talking about sports. He was known to randomly stop at ballgames to cheer on the players, whether it was a little league game or something more competitive. He especially found great joy when cheering for his son and grandchildren during their games.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Eliot and Elaine Sampson. He is survived by his sweetheart of 62 years, Sally Sampson and his children Julie (Cary) Brown, Sherie (Ken) Lawrence, and Curtis Sampson. He left a lasting legacy with 16 grandchildren and 18 (almost 19!) great-grandchildren.
