Janean (Jeanie) Alice Cahoon Erkelens

Janean (Jeanie) Alice Cahoon Erkelens (59) passed away June 2, 2012 at Davis Medical Center, surrounded by her family after a long battle against cancer.

Jeanie was born May 19, 1953 to Roland C. and Alice M. Cahoon, while the family lived in Roy, Utah. She was born the 3rd child, with two older brothers. The family lived in Roy until 1956 when they moved to Layton, Utah where the family grew to include a younger sister and brother. The family resided in Layton until moving to Fruit Heights, Utah in 1967.

She graduated from Davis High School class of 1971.

Jeanie married Leonard (Lee) Paul Erkelens in July of 1975 and resided in Layton, Utah. They were happily married until Lee''s death in September of 1999. Jeanie continued to reside in their home until her death.

They were blessed with 6 wonderful children: Layne(Brindy) Cahoon, Allison Erkelens (deceased), Jeffrey (Patty) Erkelens, Lindsay(Dan) Stalter, Jessica (Steve) Martin, Landon Erkelens, and by 12 grandchildren Charyssa and Cody Cahoon, Andre, Nicole, and Meredith Coleman, Alexis, Davin, Porter, and Coleston Stalter, Trey and Aiden Erkelens, and Tage Erkelens.

Jeanie was crafty, and busy. Family was very important to her. Through much of her life, she was a full time Mom. She kept a house that was warm and full of homey details - A place where family gathered together. Her home abounded with toys for playing grandchildren, and was spotted with photos and momentos she had gathered and antiques which carried deep significance to her for their family associations. She created many family traditions in raising her children, and was actively engaged in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Those who knew Jeanie recognized her strength of spirit, her endurance and determination when confronted with challenges in her life. Following Lee''s death, she continued to raise their children and to participate in the upbringing of their grandchildren. She worked for K-Mart as a department head for many years until forced to retire when diagnosed with cancer in 2004 which had progressed to Stage 4.

She began an on-going regimen of chemo-therapy, which was able to extend her time for 8 years. Physical effects of the treatments never stopped her, never deterred her from experiencing everything she could. It also blessed her with the opportunity to come to know 8 grandchildren after her diagnosis. She was able to be a part of their lives almost daily. Her response to each new physical discomfort, or effect was "well, that''s my new normal".

She is survived by her father, 3 brothers and 1 sister, 5 children and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Allison, her husband Lee, and her mother Alice.

Funeral services will be held at Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express sympathy to the family are asked to contribute to Janean Erkelens Charity Fund at America First Credit Union which will be donated to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
