Janis Yvonne Dinsdale Hunter, 91 years old, passed away on January 13, 2025, peacefully at her home surrounded by family following a 3-year battle with cancer.
She was born on April 4, 1933, in Nerva, Utah to Howard and Lula June Dinsdale. Due to the passing of both her parents, she was raised by her aunt Alice and uncle Lawrence VanDyke of Ogden, Utah. Jan attended local schools in Ogden and was a student at Brigham Young University, where she majored in Home-Economics. She was a member of the Cougarettes dance team and a sorority sister in O.S. Trovatas. She excelled in budgeting, cooking, sewing, and arts & crafts.
She married her high school sweetheart—John David Hunter and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple, August of 1955. Jan and John raised five bold- beautiful daughters: Natalie (Scott), Jana (Glen), Jolene (Brandon), Jonnett (Reed), and Jill (Brian). Their posterity includes 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren (and counting). She was preceded in death by her son David Keith, grandson Austin Hales, son-in-law Reed Christensen, and great grand- daughters Lindsay & Samantha Stokes.
Jan and John served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Zimbabwe and Mozambique (Portuguese-speaking). She served in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Primary and Relief Society president.
To know her is to love her. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Jan Hunter—knows what a pure ray of sunshine she was during her time on this earth. She was a light and stood for truth and righteousness. She was proud to be an American and loved our country. She was selfless and a generous person. She was always a cheerleader supporting her kids and grandkids in their adventures. Most of all, we will never forget how much she loved and adored her husband John of 70 years. They were the perfect match for one another. She will be greatly missed.
