Jason Brandt Dunlap

April 1, 1971 ~ March 15, 2014

“Shhhhhh…” he would whisper. “Don’t tell your mom,” he would say as he gifted one of the small children with yet another great little pocket knife. He loved giving his kids little surprises, but especially a vast array of varied pocket knives. Now teenagers, laughing, the kids recall the many nicked and cut fingertips of their childhood as they tried to open the blades, cut an apple, or whittle a chunk of wood. Always they tried to keep their pact with Dad and not let mom see the little smears of blood which were wiped on the hem of a t-shirt or the pant leg of a pair of jeans.

Jason Brandt Dunlap, age 42, passed away on Saturday March 15, 2014 at his home. Born to Linda and Donald Dunlap on April 1, 1971, he was everything but a fool. He was a poet, a musician, a social worker, a husband, and most importantly, a father.

Jason met and married Heidi Stevens in 1993. They were later divorced after many years of raising their four children together. In June of 2012, he met and married Sarah Shunn.

Jason loved his kids, Indie, Avery, Gracie, and Ivy. Having lost his own father in infancy, he wanted to be the father he never had. He did his best to give his children whatever material things he could, but more importantly he gave them friendship, love, and communication.

Jason obtained a Bachelor’s degree at the U of U in Social Work, and with that he worked at Farmington Bay, Catholic Community Services, and Clearfield Jobs Corp. He had great compassion for and touched many lives of the down-trodden and unfortunate. He was a see-er of souls and touched many hearts.

Jason rocked on the guitar, all 7 of them, both electric and acoustic. Music was an important part of his life and expression. He loved many great bands including The Used, Queens of the Stone Age, My Chemical Romance, Mastodon, Nirvana and many more.

Besides loving his own great kids, Jason loved the other kids, “The Dogs”. He was the alpha of the pack: Moose the Pit Bull, Oakley the Scottie, Maisey the Chorkie, and Harley the Border Collie/Blue Heeler. They are going to miss their romps with “Dad”. They already do. Dogs know.

Jason’s death was sudden and unexpected. He had battled Bi-Polar Disorder throughout his life, but was currently doing great with many plans for the future. A heart attack? A drug reaction? An accidental overdose? It is not known at the time. What is known is that he will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his wife Sarah Dunlap, his four children, Indie 19, Avery 16, Gracie 12, Ivy 10, and his four siblings: Mark (Corinne) Wigness, Brock Bynum, Brittney (Lane) Carter, and Ashley Robb. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Dunlap, his mother Linda Bynum, and grandparents, Lois Allen, and Joseph Carl Allen.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 19th at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South. The family will meet with friends prior to the services from 12:30 to1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a special fund set up for his children at Wells Fargo under the name Jason B. or Sarah Dunlap.
