Jay Butler

Our loving father, brother, husband, grandfather and great grandfather passed peacefully into his next life on March 8, 2014, at home, with his cherished wife by his side. Born March 24, 1934, in Springville, UT, he is preceded in death by all nine of his siblings and his mother and father. A father of five, he was married to Jean Butler for fifty-two years. He is survived by his wife and five children, Christopher, Larry, Paul, Michael, and Jaylene.

His career included five years at Boeing and thirty years of dedicated service at Hill AFB where he was recognized with multiple awards for exceptional performance. Jay was a great provider for his family, working a part-time job for more than seven years as grocery manager for Stimsons Market. He was active in the LDS church holding positions of Ward Clerk, Elder’s Quorum Secretary and High Priest Secretary.

A longtime resident of Layton, UT, Jay relished the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He possessed a passion for hunting and fishing that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. There were many outings with extended family and friends, most notably an annual pilgrimage to the deer camp that served as an unofficial family reunion. Names such as Davey’s Draw, Desperation, The Knoll and The Lambing Tails were among the colorful titles bestowed upon various landmarks on Billie’s Mountain in Spanish Fork Canyon, during the many years the family gathered. Some of his favorite fishing haunts included Flaming Gorge, Strawberry, Pineview and Hebgen Lake, where he taught many of the younger clan members how to fish. He was good with his hands, building, remodeling and repairing various familial structures and vehicles. He enjoyed visiting his son Mike at his job sites, lending a hand where he could.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.

Jay’s journey to the afterlife was made in comfort and with dignity, due the exquisite care of Brenda and Martha with Summit Hospice, two extraordinary people, to whom the family wishes to express their deep gratitude.
