LAYTON - Jay McDonald, 81, passed away Monday morning, April 11, 2016 at his home of a heart attack due to complications from cancer, diabetes, and congenitive heart failure.

He was born in Heber, Utah, April 6, 1935 to Joseph Earl McDonald and Edna Vera Sweat McDonald.

He married his sweetheart Ila Montgomery in July 1953 in the Manti Temple. He knew who he wanted to marry and his occupation at an early age. He had endless will and drive. If you told him it couldn't be done, he could prove you wrong. He sold property to and built the castle in East Layton for long time friend and business associate, Gary Willey.  Jay was well known for fine home building and was owner of McDonald Mill, known for curved stairways and high end mill woodwork.

His hobbies included woodturning on a lathe. He gave away numerous turnings to friends and family. Jay and Ila enjoyed going to their getaway in Scenic, Arizona at winter time, and enjoyed taking family and friends to all the local sites.

He is survived by his wife Ila, and brother Max S. McDonald (Barbara) Hooper, UT. Children Brian McDonald (Lori) Malad, ID., Jayne Smith, Clinton, UT., Burt McDonald (Erin) Syracuse, UT., Sheila Warhola, (Ken) Layton, UT. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Connie Peck Levitt.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 15, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.  Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
