Jay Smith Payne

Jay Smith Payne Jay passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. He was born June 8, 1927 in Trenton, UT to Hyrum and Sylvia Payne. He worked for 37 years at HAFB before retiring, and then worked for Davis School District until he was 83 years old. He served in the U.S. Navy. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Joyce Conner, on February 8, 1949. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple March 20, 1951. They had two beautiful daughters; Brenda Joyce and Jill. Jay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served faithfully in many capacities. He loved the Scouting Program, and earned the rank of Silver Beaver. He played baseball for the Ogden Dodgers. He loved coaching his daughter Jill and grandchildren. He loved camping and was an avid hunter. He adored children and spent countless hours with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a great capacity to love. He called everyone either “Princess” or “My Man.” He always answered the phone with “Good Morning” no matter what time of day it was. His pockets were always full of coins and treats that magically appeared from children’s ears. He was known as “the Candy Man” to the children in his ward. He entertained families for 50 years as “the Jolly old Elf himself”. He brought joy to all that knew him. Jay is survived by his bride of 64 years, Joyce, and his daughter Jill Shelton (Dave); both of Layton. He is survived by 5 grandchildren; Jayson Robinson, Texie Robinson, Bridger Robinson, Jylaire Thorell (Matt), York Cooper (Jenny). He is the great grandfather to nine precious angels; Taylor, Shaylee, London, Camryn, Beckett, Reese, Piper, Tess, and Paige. He is survived by one sister, Shirley Blanchard (Larry) of Roy. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Brenda Robinson, brothers Ray and Gilbert and sisters Ida, Erma, and Erna Ellen. Special thanks to Vista Care and Aspire Hospice for their amazing care. We love you Donette, Mindi, Rhonda, and Suzanne.
