Jay Roland Thackeray

In loving memory of Jay Roland Thackeray, 91, who passed peacefully on Monday, October 2, 2017.  He passed after issues incident to age and health problems. He was born on December 8, 1925 in Morgan, Utah to Alma Usher and Leah Hazel Nelson Thackeray. He was an extremely loving Grandfather, father and dedicated husband.

He married the love of his life, Georgia Coy Gidley on January 16, 1946 in Ogden and on January 15, 1947, their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Jay was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding the office of High Priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood. serving in many positions including bishopric. The most significant service in Jay’s heart was his dedication to volunteering as a temple worker in the Ogden LDS Temple baptism ministry for 19 years.

Jay served in the Navy during WWII and received several awards and citations, including the Purple Heart.  In September of 2015, he was honored by Utah Honor Flight with a trip to Washington, DC to visit his war memorials.

Jay worked with furniture upholstery the early years of his marriage and continued throughout his life until the end. A few years into his marriage he began his career at HAFB completing 37 years as a federal employee retiring at 55 years of age. He worked in maintenance and retired from HAFB as an item manager responsible for C5 landing gear of which he was quite proud.

Jay’s greatest qualities were his hearty work ethic, dedication to wife, and love for family. A compassionate, patient, quite man he was interested in the wellbeing of many. He loved traveling with his Good Sam gang on the many adventures they put together especially caravanning to Alaska. They also completed many hours of community service.

Jay and Coy have 5 children, Gregg (Kathy deceased), Randy (LaRae), Gary (Jeanne), Robin (Carolyn), and Joy (Jim) Summers, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and expecting 2 great-grandchildren (twins) (Aaron/Raquel), and 1 great-great-grandchild (Kelsey/Bryson). He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Jackson S Thackeray; daughter-in-law, Kathleen H Thackeray; his parents and all siblings, Al Jr., Jean, Bill, Barbara, Wayne, and LaRae.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Terrace 2nd Ward Chapel, 4210 South 300 West, Riverdale. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

His family will celebrate his life with a family luncheon at the Washington Terrace 2nd Ward.

The family would like to offer special thanks for service to Jay during his trials with this illness: Dr Harold Johnson, His favorite nurse and angel Mary Almony and his great-granddaughter BreeAna Brown.
