Jean Hutchison Binnie

May 27, 1927 ~ May 15, 2016

Our warm, loving Jean Hutchison Binnie passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016 just shy of her 89th birthday.  She was born in Ogden, Utah on May 27, 1927 to wonderful parents Robert and Lillian Green Binnie.

Jean was the younger of two daughters and is survived by her dear sister Margaret Binnie Fackrell.  Margaret and Jean shared a beautiful sisterhood and Margaret’s children were every bit Jean’s.  Her life was full of goodness and love.  She taught many by her words and example.  Jean was known for her love of children, cookbooks, and Coca-Cola.

As a young girl, Jean endured cancer.  Many years were spent at Mayo Clinic as doctors worked to cure the cancer and rebuild her face.  Her family pulled together through those long years and when the doctors had finally done all they could, Jean was devastated with the results.  Her father, Robert reassured her that truly her life was “the miracle” and she would live to bless many lives.

Thousands have been touched by Jean.  She taught elementary school for thirty-eight years, having received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Weber State College and Utah State College.  Each of her students became one of her own.  She taught at Pingree, Dee School, and T.O. Smith.  Her enthusiasm for teaching was contagious.  Even later in life, many of her first graders have come up to her and told her she was their favorite teacher ever.  She had a special talent for bringing education to life.

Jean loved the Lord and served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life.  She served in many callings including Stake Relief Society President, Stake MIA President, Primary teacher, Relief Society teacher, Beehive advisor and more.  Her lessons always included darling hand-drawn illustrations mixed with keen humor.  For many years she was a temple worker in the Ogden LDS Temple, a calling she enjoyed completely.  Often she wished she never stopped working there.

As sister, aunt, and extra grandma to all of us, Jean leaves us with happy memories.  Her life of giving and testimony is our treasure.  We love her and will miss her deeply.

Jean is survived by her sister, Margaret; nephews and nieces and their families, John (Joan) Fackrell, Jacob (Sarah), Jared, Jeremy (Heather), Jennifer (Spencer) Jorgensen, Jilanne Fackrell; Christine (Ron) Stuart, Matt (Cheryl), Erin (Bob) Wallis, Stephanie (Ty) Sparrow, Robert Stuart; Jim (Val) Fackrell, Tyler (Brooke), Lyndsie, Jaden (Brittany), Cole (Becca), Mitch, Carson Fackrell; and 16 great-grandchildren, Kate, Rylan, and Adelyn Fackrell; Emma, Benjamin, Spencer, and Trevor Stuart; Rachel, Joshua, Sara, and Allison Wallis; Bode, Wyatt, Rhett, and Colt Sparrow; Lucas Fackrell, and Quinn Fackrell.  She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Dr. Heber G. Fackrell.

We would like to thank Jean’s dear neighbors Sarah and Joe Bennett for their sweet care this last year, Dr. Brent Williams for his care over the years and the kind deacons for bringing her the sacrament each week.
