Jeffrey Thorpe Simmons

It’s been said the greatest of all the senses is a sense of humor – a sense Jeffrey Thorpe Simmons generously shared with all. From his birth to Dennis E. Simmons and Carolyn Thorpe Simmons on November 6, 1960, to his death on December 27, 2017, smiles and laughter were his ready companions.

This kind smile, hearty laugh and the man behind it started life in Las Vegas, Nevada. He actively took part in school and church activities before moving on to a year at then Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. Jeff served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the South Dakota Rapid City Mission. He loved to learn and earned a degree in history from Weber State University and a master degree in educational counseling from the University of Phoenix. This prepared him well to counsel students at Job Corps – something he counted as one of his choicest blessings.

Jeff shared twenty-five years of marriage with his beloved wife, Tracy Okelberry. This beautiful family started in the Salt Lake Temple on November 20, 1992 and will continue on through the eternities. With her as his constant support and devoted companion they welcomed their much loved son, Ian to their family.

Every gathering with friends and family looked forward to his smile, laughter and quick wit. When we remember him, let’s do so with that same spark and sense of humor he’d want us to have.

He’s survived by wife, Tracy; son, Ian; his parents and siblings: Brad Simmons, Jan (Kim) Webster, Leslie (Will) Ewing, Robert (Laurae) Simmons, Sue Ann (Joe) Pierce and Tracy’s mother, Margaret Okelberry and siblings: Scott (Janet), Wade (Lisa), and Lori (Dale) Palmer. He also leaves behind many loved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and Sammy our furbaby.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS chapel on 1325 E. Cherry Lane, Layton, Utah.  Friends may visit family Friday, January 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary 1867 No.Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

We thank the medical staffs of Ogden Regional Medical Center and the University of Utah Hospital for their magnificent service.  In lieu of flowers, please make financial contributions to the Salt Lake office of the American Diabetes Association.
