Jennie Elva Garn Smith
Our beloved mother, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend Jennie Elva Garn Smith passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 surrounded by her family.
Jennie was born on February 17, 1932, the daughter of William S. Garn and Cordelia Jackson in Salt Lake City, Utah and was the youngest of nine children. They moved to Winnemucca, Nevada when she was a baby and moved back to Salt Lake when she was 12. She married the love of her life, Clayton Smith in 1952. Their marriage is one that serves as an example of love and devotion to all those who knew them. After his illness 29 years ago, she took the responsibility for his constant care with love and tenderness.
As a young family, they enjoyed camping and boating and went as often as they could. The whole family loved to water ski and fish. After Chick’s retirement, they bought a motor home where they traveled to several locations and wintered in Wellton, AZ where they made lifelong friends.
Jennie enjoyed many hobbies including ceramics, wood painting, cross stitch, embroidery, quilting, and oil painting. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening. Her very favorite moments were spending time with family. She especially loved playing games and going to movies with her grandkids and family. The grandkids will always remember Grandma and Grandpa for Easter egg hunts, the “grandkids Christmas party”, making Christmas crafts, and PCP’s (popcorn parties). They made it a point to do special things for all of us.
She was a very beautiful lady inside and out. She loved getting her hair done and frequent manicures and pedicures. She always put others first and has always been a wonderful and giving wife, mother, grandma, aunt, and friend. Her family loves her dearly. She touched many lives and everyone who knew her is better for it.
Jennie had many church callings over the years. She especially loved the calling she had years ago, where she was over the quilting in Relief Society. She loved quilting and that calling was a fun one for her. She taught primary for many years, but her very favorite thing was singing in the ward choir. They sang beautiful cantatas for Easter and Christmas and sang almost every week in Sacrament meeting. She had a beautiful voice.
She was preceded in death by Chick in 2015, eight siblings, and other loved ones.
Jennie leaves behind four children, Jordan (Kim) Smith, Julie (Les) Merrill, Jeffery (Judy) Smith and Jill (Stephen) Hilton: 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, with one on the way, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mick and JoAnne Smith, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who all love her very much and will miss her terribly.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to her Heritage family. We’d also like to thank the staff at Lakeview Hospital and to all who have provided love and support to the family.
