Jerry Jay Sargent

Jerry Jay Sargent quickly left this mortal life to join his family on the other side of the veil on Sunday May 4, 2014. Born December 26, 1932 in Mesa, Arizona to George Ray and Fulvia McClellan. He attended school in Mesa and later worked hard to put himself through BYU in accounting, and was a member of the ROTC and Viking Club.

He married Patricia Green on August 18, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple, and spent most of his married life as a resident of Layton.

His life was one of selfless service including a member of YMMIA General Board and acting Chairman of June Conference Explorer Fair and BYU Explorer Conference.  A 50 year veteran of the Boy Scouts receiving Honorary Duty of God Award, Silver Beaver, National Explorer Committee and National Field Commissioner. Served many times as scoutmaster and other positions including Council Vice President, but his favorite accomplishments would have to include the hundreds of young men who received their Eagle Scout Award because of his relentless encouragement.

In 1960 he was asked by the Presiding Bishopric, who he traveled with frequently, to set up and manage the LDS Church Distribution program to consolidate the materials for the organizations of the church. He was a visionary who encouraged the church to move towards computers.

Followed by positions at Ingersoll Rand as Corporate Director of Distribution for where he restructured their distribution system; Levi Strauss in San Francisco where he developed and implemented an expansion plan; co-developed with son, Greg, an inventory management system which is still used by Levi s, and later started Ensign Systems, a POS Company.

He served a mission to Frankfurt Germany with his wife Pat in 1998. Always active in Family History writing several books on histories of his families ancestors.  In Layton, he was known as Mr. Christmas for his work in decorating his home and hundreds of others in the community during a 7 year period.  He personally solicited funds for the trees planted at Ellison Athletic Park. Honored as Layton City Outstanding Citizen of the Year 1995. He enjoyed raising flowers for his yard and his family in his greenhouse and loved hosting swimming parties.

He buried his beloved sweetheart Pat in 2004.  He will be remembered by Gregory (Julie), Cindy (Tim Hawkes), David (Melinda), Lucy (Michael Chard) and 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In 2008 married Verna Nichols in the Mesa Temple. She sweetly provided love and companionship these past 6 years.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Layton South Stake Center,  505 S. 1000 W., Layton.   Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
