Jewel Shelby Cowan, 88, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at Legacy House.

She was born April 20, 1922 in Brigham City, Utah, a daughter of John Wallace and Clara Ida Steffen Shelby. She was educated in Brigham City and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1940. She attended Henegar Business School in Salt Lake City.

On September 8, 1948, Jewel married Ward H. Cowan in Elko, Nevada. Ward died September 16, 1989.

She lived in Ogden, Salt Lake City and had lived in Ely, Nevada from 1953 to 1958, where her husband worked for Kennecott Copper Company, returning to Ogden in 1958 where she has lived since.

Jewel worked at Hill Air Force Base from 1942 to 1951; Cate Equipment Company in Salt Lake City, Farmers Insurance Company in Ogden and was a Resource Technician at the U.S. Forest Service Regional Office in Ogden from 1961 to 1981. She retired from the U.S. Forest Service October 1981with 30 years of Government service.

She was a member of the Nevada Federation of Women''s Club, a member of Iris Court #47, Ladies Oriental Shrine and Lybia Temple #32, Daughters of the Nile.

Jewel was a member of the LDS Church Washington Terrace 4th Ward.

She and her husband had traveled extensively throughout the United States and many foreign countries.

Jewel is survived by her sisters, Helen Hunsaker, Honeyville; Ruth Wintle, Centerville; Jean Stafflund, Sandy; and a brother, David E. Shelby, Sandy. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and five brothers.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 10th at 1 p.m. at Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

A viewing will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Shriner''s Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road at Virginia Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103, in Jewel''s memory.
