Jewel Alford Richardson

October 2, 1920 ~ July 22, 2016

Jewel Alford Richardson (Rich) 95, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016. Jewel was born October 2, 1920, in Chesterfield, Tennessee, a son of Andrew Columbus Richardson and Rada A. Dunavan.

Rich grew up in Missouri and graduated from Kewanee High School in 1939. He worked in the cotton fields to pay for his schooling. Shortly after graduation, Rich signed up for the Civilian Conservation Corp which eventually took him to Huntsville, Utah.

He always felt it was fate that brought him to Huntsville as it was shortly after that he met the love of his life, Margaret Leone Winter. They married on September 12, 1943. They resided in Huntsville 12 years before moving to Ogden in 1956. Margaret passed away in 2009 after celebrating their 66th Wedding Anniversary. Together they had four children who adore them.

Rich served in the army during WWII stationed at Camp Callon, California and Ft. Bliss, Texas. Upon receiving his discharge in January 1946, he continued his civilian government career at Ogden Arsenal and Hill Air Force Base. He retired in January 1981 as a Logistics Management Specialist. He was highly respected by all whom had the opportunity to work with him.

Rich didn’t stay idle long after retirement as he soon started helping out at Sherm’s Store driving cars to and from the auctions. He loved the camaraderie that existed at the store and gained many friendships there.

If he wasn’t at Sherm’s, he could be found watching a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball game, attending an Ogden Raptors game, or working in his garden. It seemed he could grow anything. He mostly enjoyed growing the fruits and vegetables and giving them away to neighbors and family.

Rich leaves behind many loved ones who will all miss him deeply, including his children Robert (Katheryn) Richardson and Michael (Tina) Richardson of Layton, UT; Nancy Richardson of Harrisville, UT; grandchildren Heather (Glenn) Ellis, Abilene, TX; Matthew Ellett, Chicago, IL; and Emilee Richardson, Layton, UT; great grandchildren, Caden, Connor, Courtney, and Corbin Ellis; 3 half sisters, Harriet Stapleton, Judy Lucero, Sacramento CA; and Marilyn Parter, Kansas City, KS, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter Barbara Kay Ellett, a brother, James Oliver Richardson, a half brother, Harry David Fries, and many family members all of whom he loved deeply.

The family extends a special thank you to Brookdale Assisted Living who provided wonderful care and attended to Rich’s every need; and to Hearts For Hospice – especially Brent Camille, and Brian as well as many others who were on call to help when needed. We also appreciate the kindness of many friends whose thoughts and prayers helped so much.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery.

Friends may greet the family from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Lindquist Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden, UT 84401.
