Jim Alvin Thurgood

Jim was born to Jennie Van Meeteren and Alvin Thurgood in Ogden, Utah.

He graduated from Davis High School, Weber State College and Brigham Young University. He served in the Army Reserves. He served a mission in the Netherlands. He taught at the Ogden School for the Deaf and Blind. He taught school for 35 years in Davis County at Hill Field, Cook, and Layton elementary schools. By the time he retired in 2000, he positively affected the lives of over a thousand students. He was a well-loved scout leader in West Point for many years. Jim opened a pet store in Layton, Teacher's Pets. He loved all animals and anything that had to do with them.

Jim is survived by his wife Tana and their six children: Lane (Kate) of Springfield, Virginia; Tanji Johnson (Dallas) of Syracuse; Ebon (Katie) of Hyrum; Jil Craythorne (Erik) of West Point; Clint (Heidi) of Clearfield; and Jennika Gledhill (Mike) of Clinton. He is also survived by his sister Connie Romboy (Rod) Salt Lake City, Utah. He has 31 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Later in life, Jim and Tana served together as humanitarian missionaries at the Church’s Distribution Center in Layton, Utah. Jim was always working on a project and keeping himself busy.

A viewing will be held at Lindquist Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 5. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, at the West Point Fourth Ward Chapel 2852 W. 300 N. A short viewing will be held prior to services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the West Point Cemetery.
