Joan Wanda Gisseman Hubbard passed away on March 6, 2024, at the age of 86, from heart complications. She was born on November 23, 1937, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Walter and Wanda Gisseman.
Throughout her life, Joan loved learning! She earned her B.A. from the University of Utah in 1970; M.A. from St. Bonaventure University, New York, and M.L.S., from the University of Oregon in 1976. She loved books, and had the opportunity to own her own bookstore, work for several years as an academic librarian, and complete her career at Weber State University as an Associate Professor of Library Science, and the University Librarian from 1992 to 2017, when she retired.
The two favorite women in Joan’s life were her younger sister Linda and her daughter DiAnna. She loved to share stories about how Linda was her best friend and how she relished the opportunity to be a mother to her “beautiful daughter.”
Joan married Robert Hubbard on December 21, 1962. They were married for 36 years until Robert passed away from cancer in 1997.
Some of Joan’s favorite hobbies were her work as a librarian, gardening (she loved the smell of lavender in the Spring), canning salsa for her family’s “taco Saturdays,” creating works of art in her stained-glass studio, and exercising and staying active. Joan spent countless hours caring for her manicured flower gardens and the many blue spruce trees surrounding her home in Fruit Heights, Utah.
Joan is survived by her daughter, DiAnna Johnson; two grandchildren, Amos and Winston Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Walter and Olivia Tobi Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hubbard; parents, Walter and Wanda Gisseman; sister, Linda Burns; and infant brother, Walter Scott Gisseman.
Interment will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah.
