Joanne Hadley Griffin, our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, at the age of 90. Joanne was born August 19, 1934, in Ogden, Utah to Irvin Joseph Hadley and Elizabeth Minerva Wells. She has two older sisters, Fern England and Doris Seamons. All of which have preceded her in death.
Joanne married Marcus Gordon Griffin on October 17, 1953. They were sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 17, 1958. Joanne and Marc lived most of their married lives in Clearfield, Utah. Marc passed away on June 22, 2007. In 2018, due to medical issues, Joanne moved to Fairfield Village Independent Living in Layton, Utah.
She lived there for 3 years before being moved to Fairfield Assisted Living. Joanne loved her family. Her happiest years were spent with Marc and their three children. Some of her favorite family activities were going on boating trips, watching movies and eating popcorn, playing games, gardening and going on picnics to the park.
While raising a young family, she worked part-time as an Avon Lady, and later as a product demonstration representative in grocery stores. Her engaging personality and competitive spirit often led her to sell out of the products she promoted. She had a way of connecting with people almost instantaneously.
Joanne loved unconditionally, forgave mistakes, supported, mentored, and taught members of her family how to work hard. She took advantage of every opportunity to teach members of her entire family about the gospel and the importance of loving and following Jesus Christ.
Joanne was a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ. She was a stalwart and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many callings, including Relief Society President and teacher, Primary Counselor and teacher, Stake Sunday School, Stake missionary, ward missionary, Visiting Teacher, and she was in many choirs. One of her most cherished experiences was serving alongside Marc on a local Service mission for the Church. Together, Joanne and Marc dedicated 6 ½ years to the Church Employment Offices in Roy and Sunset, offering support and encouragement to those seeking work. She occasionally spoke of the many miracles they experienced during that time – moments that deepened their faith and greatly blessed those they served.
Joanne belonged to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) organization and served as lesson leader and captain. Although it was a lot of work, she loved hosting the ladies at her home in Clearfield. She often shared pioneer stories with family members.
Joanne gave a lifetime of service, always seeing the deepest needs of others and finding thoughtful ways to help. She offered love, comfort, encouragement, complements, and hope. At one point in her life, she volunteered her time to help children of abused families in the Weber County Court System. She was able to advocate for many children and help them feel safe and loved.
Joanne will be remembered for her incredible resilience. Time and time again, she overcame serious health challenges, many of which looked like they would take her life. She pushed herself hard to regain her strength and get back to walking. Whenever she was in rehab after an injury or surgery, she was the poster child for determination. She taught all how to truly endure to the end.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to all who loved and served her, whether as family or friends. We want to give special thanks to Applegate Hospice, especially nurse Kara. She not only took care of Mom, but she also became a friend to the entire family. Thank you to all the staff who served her so lovingly at Fairfield Village.
Joanne is survived by her children: Cathy Dumas, Craig (Karen) Griffin, Chad (Tina) Griffin, 16 wonderful Grandchildren, and 26 beautiful Great-Grandchildren.
Joanne is preceded in death by her loving husband Marc, their infant twin sons Brent and Kent, and daughter-in-law, Patrice Pettingill Griffin. Her family rejoices in the reunion Joanne is having with all of them and many other members of her family and friends.
