Joel Shirriss Poorte

Joel Shirriss Poorte passed away peacefully Thursday May 20, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born July 28, 1949, the son of Lewis G. and Vera L. Hogge Poorte.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He graduated from Ben Lomond High School, attended Weber State University.  He served a two-year mission in England as well as many other church callings. Joel also served two years, active duty in the U.S. Army, and 34 yrs in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 2006 with 36 years of combined military service. He retired from Hill AFB in 2007 after 36 years civil service.

On June 1, 1973, he married Martha Hayes in the Ogden Temple.  They had four children.  They later divorced.  On June 10, 2004, he married the love of his life, Tonya, and gained two more children. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Bountiful Temple.

He loved his family, singing, dancing, camping trips, meeting people and enjoying life.

He is survived by his wife Tonya, his children: Crystal (Brad) Page, Caralee (Clint) Dibben, Amy Martin, Seth Poorte, Aubri Moss (Travis Schaefer) and Kayla (Andrew) Dean; brothers Paul (Deanna) and Lee (Judy) Poorte and sister, LaRue Collard, and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Keith, nephew Jeremy, niece Mitzi and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday May 25, 2021 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W 5600 S. The family will meet with friends on Monday from 6-8 pm and Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 am at the mortuary.
