Johannes (John) Meijert Bakker 1918-2012
John Meijert Bakker passed away at Legacy House of Bountiful on July 31, 2012 at the age of 94.
He was born on April 10, 1918 in Amsterdam, Holland to Johanna Henrietta Komijn and Meijert Bakker. John, with his mother and brother, Simon, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1930. He married Hendrika Christina Hartman in 1945. After surviving the German occupation during World War II they immigrated to Utah. They were later divorced. He married Barbara Beckel. They moved to Layton in 1970. They were later divorced. He married Vera Cook in 1977. In 2000 they moved to West Bountiful.
John worked for Mountain Fuel Supply Company and as a traffic engineer for UDOT. For several years, he also ran a coin operated laundry in Layton and on Hill Field. He was an active member of the West Bountiful 3rd Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Vera, two children Bruce John Bakker, and Bonny (Thomas) Martinez, PA; five step-children Alan (Charmaine) Malan, Vincent Malan, Bonnie (Michael) Sorenson, Lon (Shauna) Cook, Mark (Mindy) Cook, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2012 at the West Bountiful 3rd Ward Chapel, 840 N. 800 W. Friends may visit family on Thurs. Aug. 2nd from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. and Fri. from 9:00-9:45 am at the church prior to services. Interment Centerville City Cemetery.
