John Christian Bouwhuis

Our dear, loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, John Christian Bouwhuis, 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Wasatch Care Center.

He was born March 13, 1924 in Ogden, Utah to Christian and Mary Hart Bouwhuis.

John met the love of his life, LuJean Ozmun, at a White City Bowl Dance in Ogden. They were married on June 11, 1948 in Ogden. They lived their entire life and raised their children in Wilson Lane, Ogden, Utah. LuJean preceded him in death on August 13, 2007.

He was a member of the LDS church and always contributed money and time to worthy projects for the church.

John started and operated his own plumbing business, after completing a plumbing apprenticeship at Weber College and the US Naval Base at Freeport. He was well known as a quality master plumber and was loved and respected by his customers and his peers in the business. Many times he would provide free services to those in need or take payment in the form of home baked or canned goods for his work. He valued and exemplified the principles of integrity and hard work which were instilled in his children. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper and he was decorated with honors for his service.

John loved to grow a large garden and he derived great pleasure in sharing it with family, friends, neighbors and those in need. He often grew specific varieties of vegetables because he would find out that a particular variety was special to someone and it made him happy to know they were enjoying these specially grown vegetables from his garden.

He was member of the Eagles Club and enjoyed socializing with his friends from this group.

John''s life was one of giving charitable service to friends, family, church members and to his community. He was an avid outdoorsman and he loved to take his family on great camping trips to Bear Lake, Yellowstone and Hebgen Lake where they enjoyed boating and fishing. He was also an avid Utah Jazz fan and enjoyed watching the games with his wife and family.

John is survived by his children, Michael J. (Shirley) Bouwhuis, Layton; Julie (Brent) Maylin, Clinton; Amy (John) Gibson, Taylor; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way; two brothers, Albert (Blanche) Bouwhuis, Jim (Helen) Bouwhuis; and two sisters, Emma (Barney) Summers and Sindy Tenbrink.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a grandson, Micah B. Bouwhuis.

Special appreciation and thanks to Comfort Keepers, Life Path and Vista Care Hospices. Most of all a very special thanks to the wonderful care givers at Wasatch Care who extended him exceptional care.

Dad we will miss you so much; your funny sense of humor, the camping trips, those special grilled chicken dinners, the bowl of change just for the grandkids, the extra special things you did at Christmas, and of course the wonderful vegetables from your garden. But most of all you have left behind a legacy of integrity, hard work, caring, service to your fellow men and the example of a man who was a true Christian. Now you can truly rest in peace. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 15th at 1:00 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
