John M. Caywood, MSgt USAF (Ret)
John Michael Caywood, son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle died at home on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the age of 64.
John was born May 3, 1945 in Corpus Christi, TX and raised in Detroit, MI. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the US Air Force and began his long career in Munitions Maintenance. During his enlistment he served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was very proud of his service to his country.
In Denver in 1968 John met Marla Jeanne Haller. They married August 21, 1968 and later had two children: Shanna Kathleen and Sean Michael. Together John and Marla raised their happy children while living in many different states, depending on his military assignment.
As a sportsman and sports fan, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, pool, darts and watching sports events on television, especially those when any Detroit team was playing. Sundays in the fall and winter were reserved for watching the Lions with Sean, religiously. Unfortunately, watching the Lions usually resulted in tears for both.
John was a longtime member of America Legion Post 134, where he had many friends whose company he enjoyed regularly. He frequently participated in various charity events sponsored by the Legion.
Without a doubt, John''s greatest joy in life was his grandchildren: Grace Caywood Robins, Kieran Michael Caywood, and Samuel Joel Robins. There wasn''t a more vocal cheerleader at any of the various sporting events, dance performances or music recitals attended by their grandpa. The children loved his interest and support and hearing him tell (and retell) jokes and stories. John will be missed deeply. He is survived by his patient and loving wife Marla, daughter and son-in-law Shanna and Joel Robins, grandchildren, mother Veronica Bowman, sisters Jean (Matt) Piernick and Judy (Rick) Levitt and brother James (Deb) Bowman and many special nieces and nephews.
John is preceded in death by his son Sean Michael Caywood, father Parke Samuel Bowman and brother Parke LeRoy Bowman.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
