John Lawrence DeYoung (Larry) passed away on August 5, 2009 at his home in Camarillo, CA after suffering from the effects of emphysema and where he was doted on and served by his sweet and caring wife Yasuko. His earthly life began on April 29, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah where he was adopted by John and Sarah DeYoung as an infant. Their family grew to include a brother Jim (Brenda) of Saratoga Springs, UT and a sister Lucille (Jerry) LeBean of Phoenix, Az. Larry grew and learned his father''s construction trade and spent his life building and creating things with his hands from large building complexes to remodeling his own home. He was a perfectionist in every sense of the word expecting the best from everyone and motivating people around them to give their best. Larry could fix many things and celebrated the finished product. He continued to use his hands until his disease made it nearly impossible to swing a hammer. He cherished his tools and held on to them to the very end. Larry married Shirlee Lovegeon in 1954 and was blessed with two daughters, Cheryl & Christeen. They were later divorced. Later, Larry fell in love with Pauline Morley Scoffield and they were married on November 22, 1980 adding three more children to the family, Cindy Scoffield (deceased), Sherri (Steve) Einfeldt of Kaysville, UT and Lance (Cherie) Scoffield of Draper UT. They spent many happy years together moving back and forth between the Salt Lake City UT area and Camarillo CA until Pauline passed away on their anniversary 18 years later. Larry devoted his every minute to her in the last months of her life as she suffered the effects of cancer. Larry then kindled a romance with a long time friend and a true sweetheart, Yasuko Takagi Smith. They were married July 1, 2000 in Camarillo CA adding another son Charles Phillip Smith and daughter Sara (Alain) Lambert, all of Camarillo, CA. Larry''s extended family includes 11 grandchildren, all of whom he dearly loved. Larry also loved to golf. He hit many links and loved to spend time with friends and family on any course. Larry also loved to travel, but was most at home with his barbecue roasting prime rib, chops, steaks and other delicious specialties. Larry was preceded in death by many family and friends who were there to greet and welcome him home. He also leaves a great void here with those of us left for the time being. We love and miss Larry and we look forward to our sweet reunion with him. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist Layton Mortuary 1867 No. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd.
