John L. Dunyon

OGDEN a€" John Lewis Dunyon, 92, our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 1, 2010 following injuries sustained in a fall at home.

He was born October 22, 1918 in Mapleton, Utah, the fourth of eight children born to Abia William and Eunice Hurst Dunyon.

John lived an exceptional full life touching all who knew him. It would be said of Dad that he never met a stranger. He had a profound sense of love, kindness and friendliness. He extended love and friendship to his family, friends and even those he newly met along life''s journey. His life of service has been a wonderful blessing to all of us.

Dad was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings. His favorite calling, even at 92, was that as a home teacher, which he actively and faithfully fulfilled right up to the time of his death. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dad was employed at Hill Air Force Base as a jet engine test specialist where he made many lifelong friends. He retired in 1980.

Dad met his eternal sweetheart, Mary Nelson, while receiving his U.S. Army training in South Carolina. Dad served in World War II in North Africa and Italy. At the end of the war, Dad married his sweetheart Mary Nelson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 16, 1945.

Dad and Mom were the proud parents of five sons, 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. They were married 52 years until the time of Mom''s passing in 1997.

Dad rekindled his grade school friendship with Zella Allen and they were married May 12, 1998. Together they loved to travel and make new friends until the time of his passing. Dad was a great father figure to Zella''s three sons, Val, Delmon, and Donald Hamson.

Dad loved fishing, boating, camping, gardening and all things out of doors. His reputation for deer hunting stew was famous. We love you Dad! His favorite activity by far, was being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on family activities.

Surviving are his wife, Zella, of Ogden; two sons, James N. (Shanna) Dunyon, Ogden; Nathan E. (Wanda) Dunyon, Salt Lake City; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; his stepchildren and step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Lamar Dunyon, Pasco, WA.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, sons John Lewis Dunyon, David Pherral Dunyon, and Mark Ellis Dunyon.

The family expresses special thanks to McKay-Dee ICU and Dr. Glen Biddulph.
