John "Jack" E. Etherington

John “Jack” E. Etherington PLAIN CITY – John “Jack” Earl Etherington, 82, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008. Jack was born July 2, 1926 in Ogden, a son of Roland and Helen McElroy Etherington. He lived in Plain City all of his life. He graduated form Weber High School in 1944. Jack married Nelda McFarland on September 9, 1947 in Ogden. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1955. Nelda preceded him in death on March 1, 1996. Jack married Betty Taylor on September 29, 2000 in Ogden. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Plain City 6th Ward. He served his country with the U.S. Navy for two years. Jack worked on vehicles of five generations of local residents from age six when he began washing car parts for his father at Roll’s Garage. He took over the business following his father’s death in 1960 and it became Jack’s Garage. It became a place where local boys often worked and under Jack’s “patient” direction learned car repair and responsibility. Jack loved his family, riding ATV’s, classic cars, traveling and collecting antiques. He simply loved life. Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed. Surviving are his wife Betty of Plain City; his children, Cathy (Gene) Stephens, Caye (Jerry) Jones, Carol (Scott) Groeniger, Cari Etherington, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His stepchildren are: Larry (Margo) Taylor, Debbie (Benny) Blackwell and Steve Taylor, eight step-grandchildren and 16 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Plain City 6th Ward Chapel, 2225 North 4300 West, with Bishop Richard Dredge officiating. Friends may call at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd., on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday at the Ward Chapel from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, West Weber Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
