John Douglas Holmes

September 12, 1939 ~ March 27, 2016

Easter brought gratitude to one man’s family, with a quiet and peaceful passing. Sealed with a kiss on his forehead from his devoted wife, and a tight squeeze from his son Scott at his right hand, John D. Holmes (Johnny), returned to his Heavenly home.

John served in the United Sates Air Force for 24 years. The decorated Vietnam Veteran served 248 combat missions, received nine distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Force accommodations, his Flying Wings, and many more medals and honors. He then continued to serve his country at HAFB in the Commissary for 20 years. Known by all, he frequently stopped to chat and gossip with both co-workers and customers.

John was a Master Mason and Past Master of Unity Lodge #18. He also belonged to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Utah. In 2007, surrounded by his brotherhood, he received the KCCH.

John was an independent man of nature, rarely missing an elk hunt or fishing tournament. As old age got the better of him, he found his serenity camping at his LaPlatta retreat. He was also an avid fan of golf and hockey.

John was loved and admired by many. He was a charitable, giving man, willing to help anyway he could. This was most evident when, at age 68, he and Inge came to the rescue of a sweet baby Angel, whom they adopted at 3 months old.  He was a proud Papa, and enjoyed showing off his youngest son as he has grown over the years.

Johnny lived a full and blessed life and his memory will be heavy on the hearts of his family as they link hands to say grace before dinner, as was his tradition.

John is survived by his wife, Inge, three sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one sister. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

A Masonic Memorial Service and Full Military Honors will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Temple, 1240 20th (Harrison Blvd.) in Ogden.  All are welcome. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
