KAYSVILLE - John H Murdock, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2011 in Logan, UT following a brief illness.
John was born in Kaysville, Utah, August 27, 1920 to Heber Murdock and Effie Ophelia Morton Murdock. He was raised in Heber City, Utah and it was there he met his sweetheart and future wife, Thelma Brierley.
For two years, John served as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in and around Duchesne, Utah, after which he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in North Africa and Naples, Italy. He was honorably released in 1945 at the rank of sergeant.
While stationed at Alliance, Nebraska waiting to be discharged he and Thelma were married on February 5, 1945. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Following the war he and Thelma purchased land in Kaysville and while working at Hill Air Force Base, John single-handedly built a home for his young family. He worked for 35 years as a government employee at Hill Air Force Base, and following his retirement, began a new profession for several years as a meteorologist for the Raytheon Company.
John''s passion was playing the highland bagpipes; something he did for over 60 years. He was an original member of the Utah Pipe Band and Salt Lake Scots marching bands. He was also an instructor who taught many others to play.
He was a member of the LDS Kaysville 1st Ward.
Preceded in death by his wife Thelma; his one sister and two brothers; Mary Stroud, Mort and Dan Murdock; two grandsons, Ryan and Connor Murdock. Survived by his four children; Steven John (Cheri), Logan, UT; Kristine, Layton, UT; Brent Heber (Mary), Jackson, WY; and Alan James (Helene) Black River, NY; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Kaysville LDS Tabernacle, 198 West Center. Friends may visit Tuesday, November 1, from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road, and Wednesday at the Tabernacle prior to services, 9:30 a" 10:30 a.m.
Interment at Kaysville City Cemetery with military honors.
