John Bernard Ross

Having honorably completed his mission in mortality, John Bernard Ross, our father, daddy, grandpa and friend passed away peacefully on October 24, 2015.

John was born in Montrose, Colorado on May 16, 1924, the second son of John Blair Ross and Lena Ethel Masters.  He married his sweetheart, Amy Etta Green on September 25, 1949.  They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 8, 1968.

His childhood was spent in Grand Junction, Colorado.  He graduated from Mesa Junior College studying Aircraft Engineering, but further education came to a close for a time at the onset of WWII.  John enlisted in the Navy.  Due to his affinity for mathematics he was recruited and trained as a Norden Bombsight Technician and flew numerous missions for the Naval Air Core and Army Air Core in the Pacific as a bombardier.  He was an American hero having been awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star, the third highest military decoration awarded for valor.

Upon completion of his military service John continued his education at the University of Utah.   He was employed at Hill Air Force Base as a General Instruments Foreman and retired after 39 years of service.

John had an easy manner, was comfortable to be around and had a wonderful sense of humor.  Heaven just got a lot funnier.  He enjoyed working with young men in the scouting program.  As a scout master his troop was recognized as one of the top 50 troops in the LDS church and he received the Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in various capacities including bishop and member of the stake high council in the Clearfield, Utah Stake.

Thank you papa for your devotion, wisdom, strength and example.  We love you, miss you and look forward to the day we’ll meet again.

John is survived by his wife, Amy Ross, Clearfield; seven children, Kaylene Burdett, Layton; Kathryn (Edward) Rhoades, Heber; Mark (Sheila) Ross, Farmington; Jan (Philip) Nash, Kaysville; Sherrie (Paul) Jensen, Enterprise; Terrie (Kelly) Nielson, Syracuse; Ann (James) Sucese, Syracuse; 34 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
