John Deming Russell

John Deming Russell, age 80, passed away on November 7, 2023. John was born to Max and Beth Russell in Los Angelas California on December 4, 1942, and was the oldest of two children. John was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and in his youth, he was an avid boy scout, earning his Eagle and later in life serving as scoutmaster. He graduated from Fullerton high school in 1960.

John married his sweetheart Shonny Dodd on July 6, 1962, in the Los Angelas Temple a short time after having met at her at a stake dance.  They spent 61 years together having four sons, John (Judy), Mike, Scott, and James (Emily).

Early on John was intrigued by anything electronic, with one of his first jobs working in a TV repair shop. In an era when electronics was pivoting from vacuum tubes to transistor technology John was attending college at Fullerton Junior College, he learned of a program offered a position at IBM and trained as a Field Engineer fixing main frame computers, later becoming a Senior System’s Engineer. He retired after 43 years with the company.

As a computer engineer John served as the unofficial neighborhood IT repairman for many years and loved to be of service to those in need. After retirement he filled his time with family including ten amazing grandchildren and six great grandchildren, computers, and genealogy.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; Max and Beth Russell, and his sister Joy Wallstedt.

Funeral services will be held at the North Canyon Stake Center (965 Oakwood Dr. in Bountiful) on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 11:00AM. The family will meet with friends from 9:30 to 10:45AM prior to the service.
