John "Jack" Sarlo

On November 1, 2008, our all-star athlete, father, grandfather, and friend, John William "Jack'' Sarlo, 67, passed away from complications of lung cancer at home peacefully with his family by his side. He left his broken body for a new one where he can laugh, golf, bowl and all the other things he loved to do and has been unable for so long.

Dad was born May 13, 1941 in North Ogden to John and Leila Spackman Sarlo. He enjoyed a wonderful childhood with his parents and brother living near his cousins, aunts and uncles, he shared a special relationship with them. He graduated from the old Weber High School in 1959, where he was on the basketball team which took 2nd in State. He was then voted All-State in basketball and received the honor of "Mr. Athlete" his graduating year.

In 1960, Dad enlisted in the Army where he was stationed in Germany; he was honorably discharged in 1963.

He married Sharon Paice from Hooper, on August 13, 1964, although they later divorced after 30 years of marriage, they remained very good friends. Together, they had three children, Jeni, Angie and Bob, and 11 grandchildren which were the light of his life.

Our family moved to Placerville, CA where Dad was working for the Mother Lode Bank. We later moved to Reno, NV where Dad worked for Security National Bank of Nevada. Finally, we moved back to Ogden where Dad worked for the Bank of Utah for 11 years before ending his career with Flying J Corporation.

Our memories of Dad are many. He was our own sports encyclopedia. He knew just about everything when it came to sports. Basketball, football, golf and bowling were a few of his favorites. He golfed and bowled regularly until his illness. Dad was always the life of the party, either telling a joke or showing someone a card trick. For many years, he and Mom loved to have a great time with their good friends. They traveled many places, either in dad''s Jeep or to Mexico, one of their favorite destinations. Together we were always having fun.

Dad is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Sharon Paice; his daughters, Jeni (Ron) Canter, of West Haven; Angie Stein Alan, of Riverdale; and his son, Bob (Sandy) Sarlo, of Roy; 11 grandchildren; one granddaughter on the way; a brother, Doug Sarlo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the many professionals at Vista Hospice and McKay-Dee Hospital, especially, Dr. Carissa Monroy, for all the kindness, dignity and respect they showed Dad and our family during our difficult time.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist''s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 North Washington Blvd.

Friends and family may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., at the mortuary.

Interment, North Ogden Cemetery.
