John Nelson Thomas, 90, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, returned to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, October 25, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born March 3, 1918 in Marriott, Utah to Daniel Francis Thomas and Evelyn Minnie Nelson. He was reared and educated in Marriott and graduated from Weber High School and Weber College.
On January 16, 1943, Jack married Bobbie Lee Hitson. Their marriage was solemnized May 27, 1958 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Some of his fondest memories were of life on the farm, his many horses and countless escapades with his brother, Dan.
Jack was very athletic playing basketball, football, baseball and softball. While at Weber College he was named Outstanding Athlete of the Year and was captain of the football team. He stayed an avid supporter of Weber State University athletics until his death.
He was a veteran of WWII serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and received the Purple Heart when wounded in the Sicily campaign.
Jack worked at Johnson Electric Motor as a journeyman electrician and later he and Bobbie purchased and operated the business until retirement.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a beloved bishop for six and a half years. He also served as a High Counselor, bishopric counselor and in many other callings.
For many years, Jack and Bobbie had a cabin in Liberty, Utah winning outstanding landscaping awards. It was the focal point for many of his much loved family gatherings. In his later years he enjoyed the weekly "Championship of the World" golf matches and Friday morning breakfasts with his friends. He loved everyone he met and once said the thing he enjoyed most in his life was his associations with other people. He was ADORED by his family and loved by all. He was a special, special man.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, four daughters, Carolyn Sue Toscan (Tony), Patty Wintle (Wally), Debra Holt (Jace), Jackie Hanson (Lon), and one son, Steve Thomas, 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and his sister, Shirley Clark.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepmother, Hortense Thomas, brothers, Dan and Paul, and two grandsons, John Philip Toscan and Jacob Thomas Holt.
The family would like to extend appreciation to his dear friends, Duane Nay and Howard Bott, for their constant support and love. Special thanks to Vickie and John with IHC Hospice for their kindness and care.
