LAYTON a€" John Walton Waite passed away quietly the morning of January 16, 2012, to meet with those of his family who preceded him in death. Present at the time of his death were his wife and daughter who have attended to his every need.

John was born on December 20, 1921, to John Earl Waite and Myrtle Ann Burton. He was raised in Kaysville, Utah.

John married Jolean Jones in the Salt Lake Temple on September 6, 1949, and raised their family of five sons and two daughters in Layton, Utah.

He is survived by his wife, Jolean, and children, John Leonard (Julie) of Canton, Michigan; Paul (Janet) of Layton, Utah; Jeff (Sherri) of Palmyra, Virginia; Kelly (Mary) of Layton, Utah; Mark (Coleen) of Loveland, Colorado; and Susann (Harold) Kerkman of Roy, Utah; and their families. In total, he leaves a posterity of 34 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

His life was focused on service to others, from the time he spent in the military serving in the Pacific Front during World War II, followed by service as an LDS missionary in the Western States Mission. After finishing his mission, he entered Brigham Young University and completed a Bachelor Degree in preparation for his lifelong love of teaching and education. He returned to Davis County, where he taught school for 37 years at many schools in the Davis District: Verdland Park Elementary, Hilltop Elementary, Hill Field Elementary and Holt Elementary. Even before he retired from teaching his desire to keep busy was occupied by countless hours on a lawn tractor as he worked to manicure the lawns around the schools. During his working years he ran a TV and Radio Repair business out of his home for many years using the knowledge he gained during his years in the military.

His life of service as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints included, serving in the bishopric of the Layton First Ward, on the Stake High Council, and the Patriarch of the Layton Stake. John and Jolean served in the Halifax Canada Mission and were assigned to work with the people of Newfoundland. They greatly loved their service with those choice people. He had a large collection of quotations that he shared with others. He loved to make you laugh and always had a story that had come from his most recent reading. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Layton Stake Center, 60 W. Gordon. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
